Just over a year after officially launching as a grassroots organization focused on advancing progress politics in North Brooklyn, In The Fight has released our first ever full slate of endorsements for key races in 2021 municipal elections.

In all due humility, we’re incredibly proud and pleased to endorse a group of progressive candidates that reflects North Brooklyn as well as the wider city: multiracial, multigenerational, with experience in different sectors, and a common progressive vision for a city politics and policymaking that…

Permission to do bad: the Republican ethos

By Matt Duell, ITF Founding Member

At the most fundamental level, our morality is communicated through the stories we tell. From our fairy tales and religious texts to our comic books and television shows, good and evil is communicated through both action and statement.

American culture at large tends to tell stories that assign value to a certain shared set of traits, such as generosity, kindness, and perseverance. However, Republicans have spent the last three decades giving their followers permission to ignore these values.

Just over a year ago, in early March of 2020, the WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic — and our lives drastically changed. New York City locked down, as did much of the nation. Soon enough, New York City became an epicenter of the virus in the US — and arguably in the world. …

Last night in Atlanta, a man murdered eight people at three different spas, six of them Asian women. In The Fight North Brooklyn sends our deepest sympathies to the families and community of the victims. We also send strength, love, and solidarity to our Asian and Asian-American neighbors here in New York City and across the country and world. Members of the Asian community and allies have been ringing alarm bells for months now about the spike of anti-Asian violence from Oakland, CA to our own Flushing, Queens.

Though the police offered an explanation of the shooting that suggested the…

As I write this in early November, 2020, election results are trickling in. The votes we’ve counted (not all of them yet) far surpass the votes cast in any other US election. Yet the rates of eligible voters who’ve cast a vote ranges from 30–70%. And this is record turnout. Given that, it’s safe to say that most Americans eligible to vote don’t do so. Most don’t write to their elected officials or volunteer on campaigns. Most don’t go to town halls, sign petitions, attend rallies, or march in…

The results are finally in: we have at least gotten some of the results that we hoped for and worked towards this past year. Trump has lost, Democrats have kept the House, and there is still potential to take the Senate after the run-offs in Georgia. In a historic moment, we’ve elected the first woman to the Executive Branch — a Black and South-Asian woman, at that. People across this nation stood with progressive values through winning ballot measures, from raising the minimum wage to protecting wildlife to legalizing substances for medical uses. …

“Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

“You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” — The Dark Knight

“It’s hard to put a leash on a dog once you’ve put a crown on its head.” — Game of Thrones

These are all variations on the same cultural myth — that using power is dangerous. That any attempt to do good risks an inevitable slide towards evil. That we must be literally superhuman to avoid this temptation, and that no real human being can…

“People are homeless and hungry, and local governments are broke — why should we pay for you to write slam poetry and make weird performance art?” — if you’re in the arts sector, you’ve not only heard something like that, it’s how it most often feels like the world sees you. What many Americans don’t fully understand is the quantifiable and unquantifiable gifts that this sector offers all of us. Because of the economic crisis resulting from COVID-19, it is not an exaggeration to say that we might lose those gifts — essential social nourishment, rather.

For the vibrancy of…

“During a recent visit to the United States, French President François Mitterrand stopped to tour California’s Silicon Valley, where he hoped to learn more about the ingenuity and entrepreneurial drive that gave birth to so many companies there. Over lunch, Mitterrand listened as Thomas Perkins, a partner in the venture capital fund that started Genentech Inc., extolled the virtues of the risk-taking investors who finance the entrepreneurs. Perkins was cut off by Stanford University Professor Paul Berg, who won a Nobel Prize for work in genetic engineering. He asked, ‘Where were you guys in the ’50s and ’60s when all…

We started In The Fight North Brooklyn with the vision of creating a society transformed where all people have the power to fight for, and achieve, progressive change through a politics that champions integrity and conviction. In order for all people to have this power, we must first create systems and institutions in which everyone is afforded the same dignity and humanity in the eyes of the state; we must create true justice. In America, this specifically means working towards a society in which Black people have full equity.

We…
